7.48 lakh electors to decide fate of 245 candidates in 31 DDC constituencies going to polls on Sunday

Jammu, December 12: Nearly 7.48 lakh electors will cast vote on Sunday to decide the fate of 245 candidates who are in fray in 31 constituencies going to VIth phase of maiden District Development Council polls in Jammu and Kashmir.

Of these 124 candidates are contesting the polls in 14 constituencies in Kashmir, 121 candidates are in the fray in 17 constituencies in Jammu. 

For smooth conduct of polling, the State Election Commissioner said that 2071 polling stations have been set up across the UT including 1208 in Kashmir and 863 in Jammu. Of these, Kashmir has only 11 normal polling stations as the rest 1047 are hyper sensitive and 150 sensitive, K K Sharma said.

Against this, Jammu has only 83 hyper sensitive and 291 sensitive polling stations and the remaining 481 are normal, he added.

Apart from DDC polls in 31 constituencies, by-election will be held for filling up 77 sarpanch and 334 panch seats as well, Sharma said. 

Pointing out that a total of 127 sarpanch vacancies and 1548 panch fancies had been notified fir by-election during the VIth phase. 

However, while 30 sarpanch vacancies had got filled up unopposed, there were no contestants for remaining 20 seats.

Similarly, a total of 745 panch vacancies have been filled up unopposed, no one has filled nomination papers at 475 places.
