Jammu: A major tragedy was averted in Jammu Kashmir ahead of the Independence Day as UT Police along with security forces on Friday arrested a person and seized from him an IED having four sticky bombs in Mendhar area of Poonch district.

Identifying the arrested person as Mehmood Hussain of Kasbalari, sources said that a joint naka was established at Morh Kotan on the basis of a tangible information of BSF. The naka party also seized Rs 10,500 from him.

Police have registered a case at Mendhar police station and started investigations.

Nearly two dozen sticky bombs were first time seized in the Union Territory by police from near the international border in Samba district during March this year, prompting security agencies to bring changes in its counter insurgency strategy to deal with the new threat. The sticky bombs are IEDs with magnetic properties and these explosive devices have been used by Talibans in Afghanistan against US led coalition forces.
