Islamabad: At least seven Pakistani soldiers were killed in a terrorist attack in the country’s restive Balochistan province, a statement from Pakistan’s army said on Sunday.

Officials said gunmen attacked the Frontier Corps post in the district of Harnai in Baluchistan province. During the intense exchange of fire, seven soldiers were killed, it said. The attackers fled the scene and made their way into the mountainous terrain before other security teams could arrive the spot.

The area was cordoned off and escape routes blocked to apprehend the fleeing miltants.

“Such cowardly acts by inimical elements backed by anti-state forces will not be allowed to sabotage the hard earned peace and prosperity in Balochistan,’’ the army said.

Commenting on the attack, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that he was “saddened’’ over the loss of lives. “My heartfelt condolences and prayers go to their families,’’ he added.

The attack on the Frontier Corps comes a day after a bomb exploded near a soccer field, killing two spectators and wounding six others in Panjgur district in Southwestern Baluchistan.

Similar attacks in the past have been claimed by separatist groups in the area. Islamic militants also operate in the region.

Baluchistan has been battling an insurgency for more than a decade. Baluch separatists demand complete autonomy or a massive share to locals from the province’s gas and mineral resources. (Agencies).
